Why I Still Believe in Door-to-Door

DoortoDoor

There are few methods of evangelism that I enjoy more than door-to-door evangelism! I love getting out, meeting new people, taking time to hear their story and then offering them hope in Jesus Christ. I have had people stop me in the local store remembering me stopping by their door and have an opportunity to continue the conversation. While there are some who would not use this method, I want to share with you some reasons that I still believe that door-to-door evangelism is a method we should employ in our churches today.

  1. Biblical Method—This ought to be the basis of any method that we employ in our church ministries. Throughout the book of Acts we find that the early church and its leaders were active in teaching the Gospel by two methods. They taught it publicly and from house to house. Acts 5:42 “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” Acts 20:20 “And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,” I believe that this Biblical method is time honored and very practicable today!
  2. Measurable Method—We have been commissioned by Jesus to preach the Gospel. Acts 1:8 tells us that we are to be His witnesses in our own cities and throughout the whole world. We can witness on street corners, at parades and other public events, but none of those are measurable. They do not allow us to know that we have touched the whole city with the message of the Gospel. I believe in using all kinds of methods, but nothing allows us to measure progress like door-to-door.

At Grace Baptist Church we measure our progress with a map system. We have a book of maps in a three ring binder. Members check out a map that with a highlighted street. They take the Outreach Cards that are in use at that time and go out in teams of two knocking on the doors. They turn in the map once they have completed it. The street is then marked as accomplish on our large progress map which is displayed off our lobby.

  3. Personal Method—Businesses covet word of mouth advertising. Personal endorsements of a product or business are extremely powerful. I believe this is one of the reasons that God told us to go and verbally share Christ (Matthew 28:19-20). He created us and knows that we respond to the witness or testimonials of others.
  4. Involving Method—Ephesians 4:12 tells us that every believer is a minister. Acts 1:8 tells us that we are all witnesses. I believe that every Christian should be actively involved in sharing Jesus Christ in their community. I believe the church should organize, equip and encourage believers to be obedient to the Great Commission. Door-to-door soulwinning provides opportunity for everyone to be involved.

Recently I shared an outreach vision with our church call Target 45429. It is our goal to knock each door in this area three times before moving on to other parts of our city. There is a large opportunity for many to be involved. Furthermore, there are some who legitimately cannot get out there on the sidewalks for health reasons. I shared with them that we need people to come meet at church while soulwinning is in progress and pray that God will empower those out knocking doors. We also need babysitters so that younger families can be involved. These are additional and important ways for believers to be involved.

  5. Proven Method—I can think of people right now in our church that have be reached in that past several years by door-to-door. I was recently on a ministry trip with our teens and my wife had the opportunity to lead  lady to Jesus at the door. She has been attending her church and has even brought a guest. Maybe you can think of a story of someone in your church reached through door-to-door.

Don’t give up on this awesome method! Get a map of your city, divide it up and determine to knock on every door in your city. You will be amazed how God will bless your desire and faithfulness in the harvest.

Thoughts from our Project

Untitled design-4This past Monday, our church was able begin phase one of our Auditorium Enhancement project. For over a year we have been praying about and raising funds. It is so exciting to see a fresh, new look taking shape. I would like to praise the Lord in several specific ways in regards to this project.

  1. Jesus is the Motivation
It may seem obvious, but I want to praise the Lord that Jesus is the reason and the motivation behind this project. Jesus is the reason we exist as a church, He is the one whom we serve and the one whom we desire to magnify in every venture we undertake.
  2. Believers with a Heart for God
Praise the Lord for believers who have had a heart for God and a willingness to sacrifice, giving of their time and finances. I am thankful for those who have prayed. I am grateful for the spirit of unity that the Holy Spirit has given to God’s people.
  3. Wisdom from God
Many have co-labored on this project to this point with a heart to be guided by God’s wisdom. Praise God for wisdom for each step of the way! God’s wisdom allows all of us to carry out His will and to exercise our gifts in a skillful manner.

May God continue to guide and use Grace Baptist Church to impact Kettering and our world for Jesus Christ.

Think About It!

IMG_2410You have heard that humans are creatures of habit. What is habitual often takes place with little thought or at least fresh thought. It is very easy to allow this to happen in our church attendance. Whether it is the weekly services or a special set of revival meetings, we can go, sit and listen with little thought of preparing ourselves to receive with meekness the engrafted Word. Before you rush off to church this morning, would you take a moment to think about what you are doing. Think about what God wants to do in your heart. Think about what you want God to do in your heart. As you think about it, consider doing the following.

  1. Pray—give God permission to work in your heart by the power of His Word.
  2. Expect—anticipate that God will give you something awesome from His Word.
  3. Commit—resolve to respond in obedience to all that God shows you in His Word.
  4. Act—choose to immediately practice what you have been taught from His Word.

Remember, every time you walk into church and hear biblical preaching, it is a blessing and a gift from God. Don’t take it for granted. Think about it!

Someone Cared

TYPE DESIGN

Can you think back to the day you accepted Jesus as your personal Savior from sin? Can you remember the person God used to point you to Christ? Maybe it was your mom or dad, your pastor, a faithful soul winner at your door or maybe it was an unknown person who left a tract in a public place. Whoever it was, they cared for you!

Today, you and I will have opportunities to connect with people. People who are doomed to spend eternity in the fires of hell. Would you care enough to give the truth to them? Would you care enough to tell them of what Jesus did for you? Would you care enough to invite them to attend church with you?

Would you be someone who cares?

John 5:7  The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

No Bible!

Recently my wife and I attended the Outreach Conference at Faith Baptist Church in Avon, Indiana. We both were blessed and invigorated. One of the sessions that I attended was by Dr. Ken Fielder. He is the president and director of WorldView Ministries. They are “committed to both the training of Bible translators and to Bible translating and publishing for the unreached people groups of the world.”

He posed a very probing question that I have been thinking about and believe it would do us all good to pause and consider.

What would your life be like without the Bible?

Think about the questions you would have. Think of the confusion you would experience when going through trials and injustices. You would wonder who to worship. You could not know where you came from. There would be no value to life. Without the Bible and the knowledge of the one true God you would be completely heathen. You would be lost and on your way to hell.

There are 4,000 plus languages that do not yet have a copy of God’s Word in their hands. While we in America have multiple copies, they have none. I believe it is time that we begin to spend time in prayer and financially support this great need! We must do our part as individual people and churches to give the heathen God’s Word in their own language so that they can know Him.

Followers of Christ, Fishers of Men

The American way is one of convenience and ease or at least that is what we expect. This is readily apparent with people start complaining when they wait more than 90 seconds in a McDonald’s drive-thru for a Big Mac. Americans want it now and they want it to be easy. Yet, when it comes to winning souls to Jesus Christ there are no convenience plans—no shortcuts. Being a soul winner means taking up your cross and being willing following Christ. (Luke 14:27)  As Jesus was choosing His disciples, he called to Peter and his brother Andrew, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” While I believe that soul winning training is vital and important for every believer, nothing can replace the training one will get from daily following Jesus—being His disciple. There are no shortcuts around it. If you want to win souls, start following of Jesus. Fall in love with Jesus!

Follow Him in His Mission

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Christ entire purpose in coming to earth was to see lost and sinful men repent and turn to Him for salvation. He prioritized this mission. All through His ministry He was laser focused on His mission.

Follow Him in His Sacrifice

1 Corinthians 5:7 “For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us…” Are you willing to sacrifice? Jesus gave his life for us. He endured all the pain of death so that we could enjoy the power of new life in Him. If our Lord sacrificed his life, could we not sacrifice our time, talents, comfort and preferences to be fishers of men? Lets not fool ourselves, if we preach the same message that Christ preached while here on earth, it will require sacrifice. Philippians 1:29 “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake…”

Follow Him in His Love

Have you stopped to think of all that Jesus has done for you, all that love He has poured out on your life? He died in your place. He moment by moment intercedes for you. He guides you through the Spirit. He does not give up when you refuse to hear Him. He loves you! How much we ought to love others as He has love us. John 15:13  “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:14 “For the love of Christ constraineth us…”  Paul followed Jesus in His love for the lost. Does Christ love constrain you to be a faithful witness?

Follow Him in His Compassion

Over and over we see Christ throughout His ministry stop and show compassion on the lost. He did not judge them, he cared for them. He fed them, healed them, took time with them and forgave them. It is easy for believers to look on the needs of the lost and be cynical and judgmental when our Lord would have us to show compassion. Matthew 9:36 “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.”

What happens to you when you see the lost? Do you focus on the marks of a life without Jesus? The emptiness of their souls? The bondage of their sin? Ask Christ to fill your heart with His compassion for their souls. All throughout our neighborhoods and cities are lost people who just like the impotent man in John 5:7 say, “…I have no man…” No man who will care about their soul enough to show them the way to have peace in life and hope beyond the grave. God help us to be followers of Christ and fishers of men.
