Fellowship with the Believers

Image

I was blessed this past Sunday night to see all the people who attended the Lifestage Home Fellowships. There was a great spirit and I could see that believers were encouraged from time spent together. I believe fellowship is one of the most important components of strong churches. Here are some reasons.

  1. It was practiced by the early church. Acts 2:42 says, “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles ‘doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” It says they continued steadfastly. This was not just something casually attempted but rather a key component to the church. Note that in the order fellowship come second after doctrine—the preaching and teaching of the Word. It is important!
  2. It is vital to spiritual strength. 1 Corinthians 15:33 “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” Believers are inundated with world through the radio, podcasts, TV, Facebook, Twitter, internet and secular agendas. Everywhere you turn it seems the world is communicating with you. How badly we need good communication to build up our spirits, encourage us to guard our hearts and motivate us to serve our Lord. For the sake of your Christian walk, be sure to prioritize fellowship with the believers.
  3. It is an outflow of love. 1 John 4:21 “And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.” God has commanded believers to love each other. Think about it, you spend time with the people you love. Fellowshipping with believers shows your love for them. Sometimes believers will look at fellowshipping based on personal need. Fellowship is not about us getting our needs met, but meeting the needs of others. According to 1 Corinthians 13:5 love “...seeketh not her own…” True love causes us to fellowship with other believers even if there is nothing in it for us. Consider the well known verse found in Hebrews 10:24-25 “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” The whole point of attending church and engaging believers in fellowship is to motivate fellow believers to love and good works in the time remaining before the rapture. Make sure intentional fellowship with the believers has place in your life. You can be sure you will be blessed in the process.

What God Always Blesses

IMG_0681 - Version 2

Recently the Lord has blessed our church with growth in our children’s ministries especially in our  Wednesday night Masterclub program. We have been running our 15 passenger van on Wednesdays and have been filling it. For some time now have been in need of additional transportation. We have had to use personal minivans to get all the kids in to church. What a blessing! Because of this great problem, we as a church began to pray that God would bless us with a church bus. We began to look and God led us to a person who would get us a retired school bus from a state auction. The church voted, gave and by faith moved ahead with purchasing a bus. I cannot tell you the joy it was to see this big yellow bus pull into our church parking lot. It was a such an answer to prayer and I believe a huge step in our church growing in our heart for souls.

No doubt this new ministry tool is a blessing from God and with that said, I believe that in our own lives as Christians and in our churches that there are attitudes and actions that God always blesses. I trust these will be  a blessing to you.

God Always Blesses Faith

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

The believer who will choose to live by faith will undoubtedly experience God’s blessing. Living by faith is trusting God when it seems circumstantially impossible. God has always rewarded people and churches who will live by faith, not by what the experts say, the critics scream or the economy demands.

God Always Blesses Faithfulness

Matthew 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

When you live by faith that will result in a life of faithfulness to the Lord. Sometimes we think when we have more we will serve God faithfully. That fact is that God want you and I to serve Him faithfully with what we have. You see, If you will not serve God with $10 in your pocket, you will not serve him with $1,000. If you will not serve God with a 15 passenger van, you will not serve him with a bus. God wants us to be faithfully labor with what we have and we we do He will bless.

God Always Blesses a Heart for Souls

Matthew 28:19-20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

God blesses a heart for souls because it is His heart. He wants all men to be saved. He wants your neighbors, those bus kids to be saved. He blesses this kind of heart because it is an obedient heart that has decided to be a witness and make a difference for Christ. It is a sacrificial heart that has determined that no matter the affliction people must hear about Jesus. I believe God has blessed our church because of its heart for souls and Oh that God would help us continue to grow in it.

My desire is to have the blessing of the Lord on my life. I hope it is your desire too! May God bless you as you live by faith, serve faithfully and have a heart for souls.

Men’s Retreat 2014

Image

Without reservation I can say that Men’s Retreat 2014 was the best retreat I have seen at Grace Baptist Church. There was an excellent spirit in the men and a desire for God’s Word. Despite the winter temperatures and weather, the attendance was fabulous. Here are some of the reasons for a great retreat this past weekend.

  1. God’s Presence—We prayed and prepared for this retreat and God blessed us with His unmistakable presence. As the Word was preached I sensed that God was deeply working in our hearts as men. He helped us identify the challenges that we as men face in these days and how to overcome them. He showed us that we can live holy lives in an unholy world. He taught us how to walk in victory day by day. He led us to prayer for strength to be the men, husbands and fathers that we ought to be. It was awesome to see God work in my heart and in the hearts of our men in specific areas.
  2. Great Preaching—God promises to bless and use the preaching of the Word. We were blessed to have Pastor Dan Mawson, Senior Pastor at Victory Baptist Church in West Chester, PA, as our retreat speaker. His heart for God and enthusiastic preaching was a blessing.
  3. Good Music—There is nothing like a group of men singing praises to God. It is bold, heart felt and glorious. I love singing and was certainly moved by this year’s music. It was a blessing to sing songs of salvation, heaven, victory and praise. We sang that encouraging song I’m on the Winning Side reminding us that the Devil is a defeated foe and we stand with our God on the winning side. The men sang this song for the Sunday Morning Service as a testimony to our Lord.
  4. Godly Fellowship—Men are bombarded with the influence of the world on a daily basis and are often wearied with its temptations. The godly fellowship found at Men’s Retreat was refreshing and encouraging.

If you missed Men’s Retreat 2014, I would encourage your to listen to the messages here and then make plans to attend next year, January 30-31 with Pastor Marc Monte. You will be glad you did! Until then, seek to be faithful to the Lord, to your wife, your family, and your church. The Devil is not playing games and neither should we. Let’s be men for God that make a difference by being different.

I Love Seeing God Work!

Cola-Clash

This past week we had the Cola-Clash team come to help us reach Kettering teens for Jesus Christ. I was blessed by the zeal of the team members to recruit as many teens as possible to the three days of carbonated competition. The Lord blessed with record number of recruits and we entered the evening rallies anticipating God to work. He did work.  Each night teens came back to receive Jesus as their Savior. Friday night (the final night of Cola-Clash) we gave the teens who received Christ the opportunity to stand and make their decision public. All of them did and what a blessing it was to see them stand unashamed of Jesus Christ. Over the three days we saw ten come to Christ along with 4 other assurance related decisions. I am looking forward to helping these young people grow in their new Christian life.

We prayed that God would save teens in Kettering. It was our heart to bring hope into their lives. God did answer our prayer! While we were busy with the Cola-Clash, God allowed a local tragedy to bring many more teens to Jesus. Austin Rife was a 15-year-old young man who was killed by a drunk driver on August 8th. His funeral was on August 15 and while praying with the Cola-Clash team that morning, I felt impressed of the Lord to attend the Funeral. I am glad I did! We had prayed that God would help the preacher to give the Gospel clearly, but I did not anticipate what happened. The preacher, Jeff Rose, stood and gave one of the clearest, timely Gospel messages I have ever heard as well as extended an invitation to receive Christ. The first ones to respond were three High-School young men and then many more teenagers began to respond. They made their way to the front where several personal workers helped them know what to do. I counted around 31 people who responded, most of them teenagers.

It amazes me to see how God is able to work and bring people to salvation. He uses even tragic situations to bring hope to many.  I am praying that God will continue to work in our city to draw the lost to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

Please join me in praying for the Rife family as they continue to grieve for Austin.

Reasons I am Thankful for My Parents

Parents_Jim:Dawn

The dishonoring of parents seems to have become an epidemic in this generation. The Bible tells us to “…Honor thy father and mother…” in Ephesians 6:2.  The word honor means to ascribe worth to a person. It is a command that is to be consistently carried out and it has no expiration date.  Honoring your parents as an adult entails giving them opportunity to guide you, to warn you and to advise you. We honor  them when we give their counsel in our lives more weight and thought than the counsel of others. There are many more aspects of honoring but the bottom line is God never condones the dishonoring of parents. Even our Lord Jesus was subject to earthly, flawed parents. (Luke 2:51) He even honored his mother from the cross. I just want to say, it is my desire to obey God fully in this area, to teach my children to do so, and to call on others in my generation to do the same.

God has blessed me with loving parents who know what they believe and make no apology for it. I respect that in them! They are not perfect, but neither am I. I just thank the Lord for allowing me the privilege to be their son. Here are just some of the reason why I am thankful for them.

  1. I am thankful for their commitment to Christ. People can be committed to alot of ventures but my parents have been committed to the cause of Christ from my earliest memories. Nothing was more important to my Father and Mother than the ministry God had called them to. We all worked in it together and made it a family effort.
  2. I am thankful for their love for God’s Word. I remember walking in on my parent’s devotional time often. I could count on it that my father would be on the couch at about 6:30 AM reading his Bible and sipping Alfalfa (that particular practice I have replaced with a good cup of black coffee). I knew that walking with God and knowing Him in the Word was important to my dad.
  3. I am thankful for their standards. They taught me that standards were the fences we put up to keep from breaking the clear principles of God’s Word. They set their standards because of a desire to please the Lord. Due to their example, I have chosen to set standards for my own family.
  4. I am thankful for their provision of our needs. My parents were never rich, yet our needs were always taken care of. Whether it was a new pair of Nike’s or a bike it seemed my parents would figure a way to make it happen.
  5. I am thankful for the memories. Granted, we spent alot of time working together, but we had some traditions that made for great memories. We always took several weeks each summer to go to Milwaukee to visit my grandmother. During this time we would often do mountain biking, wading in Lake Michigan and sleeping in tents in the backyard. Sometimes we would go further north to my grandma’s cottage which was always an amazing adventure. There are many more memories, but I think these make my point.
  6. I am thankful for their character training. I did not like the work ethic while they were trying to instill it, but I am so gald for it now. They taught me to work hard and focus on the task at hand. Some children resent their parents for making them work, but I appreciate the training immensely!
  7. I am thankful for their faith through trials. Watching parent go through trials is not easy. Learning from their faith is amazing. I can think of several times when my parents we under pressure and rather than buckling they turned to God in faith and were strengthened.
  8. I am thankful for their faithfulness. I appreciate the fact that they have been faithful for over thirty years to the ministry God called them to. I am know it was not always easy and I am sure there were times they were tempted to quit. Yet they looked to God in faith to enable them to be faithful. They are an incredible example to me of faithful ministers of the Lord.
  9. I am thankful for an ongoing, healthy relationship. I appreciate being able to call home and talk to my parents with no tension. We may not do everything exactly the same (by the way, no two people do), but I respect them for the stands they have always taken. Because they taught me to keep a clean conscience, I don’t feel like I have to justify and argue constantly for my viewpoint on any particular issue.
  10. I am thankful for their guidence. I am thankful that my parents still feel the ability to call me up and advise or warn me. I appreciate the times I have recieved wise counsel from them. When something especially burdensome is on my heart, their is nothing like being able to talk it out with them, maybe even cry together. I welcome their guidence even as an adult.

If you have not stopped to think through the reasons you are thankful for your parents,  today would be a good day. If you have a strained relationship with them, decide to work out the tension areas. Don’t let another day go by without choosing to honor them just as the Bible says. You will be glad you did!

What’s Your Bushel?

What's Your Bushel?

I was fueling up at the gas station recently and had an interesting divine appointment that got me thinking. The man using the pump across from me was staring at me which made for an awkward moment but then he spoke up.

He said, “Do you go to that church?” He was pointing to a Baptist church across the road. I told him that I went to Grace Baptist Church in Kettering. The conversation continued on spiritual things and it was awesome to see how the Lord set up the opportunity with this man. However, what caught my attention is when he told me the reason he had to talked to me. I did not ask him, he offered this on his own. He said, “I just had to say something to you, I knew you were a Christian because your light was shining.”

This caused me to do several things. First, praise the Lord! Second, I pray that my light is always shining for Jesus. Third, I must ask what is it that allows people to see a Christian’s light shining?

Jesus told us that we as His followers are lights and to be shining in this dark world.

Matthew 5:14-16

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

In this passage we have a statement of fact, “Ye are the light of the world…

We as Christians are the light that God has left in this world to witness for Him. Acts 1:8 bears this out when it tells us we are witnesses. These are facts that lead to the question, “How bright is your light? How effective is your witness?” As a Christian you cannot change that fact that you are a light, but you do determine if that light is seen or not.

We also have a command, “Let your light so shine before men…”

Christ commands us to shine. That word shine means to beam, to radiate brilliancy. We choose whether our light is dim or radiant. So what is it that dims our light? What bushel do you allow over your light that dims it or makes it invisible?

Before I describe some possible bushels, I want to make an important point about our lights. In our day it is popular among Christians to espouse the thinking that all that matters is the heart — what is on the  inside. However, I see that Jesus commanded us to be visible for Him. Certainly the heart matters and it must be right with God if we are to shine on the outside, but the outside must shine too. So lets not get caught up in the thinking that what is visible about you is not important, just the invisible. We must shine — that’s visible!

Let’s consider some bushels that can hide our light:

  1. A Backslidden Heart. Nothing will dim and hide our light faster than not being right with God. Fellowship with our Heavenly Father is put on hold when we cling on to sin that the Holy Spirit has told us to confess. Psalm 66:18 “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” Those are fearful words to one who has chosen to walk in sin. The fact is, when we are out of fellowship with our God, our light is hidden. We have busheled it! Let the Psalmist’s prayer be your prayer, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)
  2. A Joyless Countenance. Whether it is a constant smile, a pleasant look or light in the eyes, you can tell a Christian who is in love with God. The world can’t mistake it! The faces of the lost communicate anger, hate, hurt, discouragement, and hopelessness. The faces of Christians should communicate love, joy, peace, gentleness and goodness. We often don’t shine for Jesus because our faces don’t  tell a story that the lost notice and then want to hear.
  3. A Confusing Appearance. Every serious business is keenly aware of the power of a distinct and identifiable appearance. They will spend a great deal of money on sharp uniforms. Again, in our military an orderly appearance is an absolute. It should be no different for the follower of Christ. Your appearance should send a clear distinct message for the Lord. Be careful not to wear clothing, hairstyles and accessories that cause people to think you are a follower of the world. The world pushes its name brand shirts, its tattered jeans and the grunge look. Lets rise above it and have a clean, neat, distinct and identifiable appearance that shines for Christ.
  4. A Worldly Speech. The world has its lingo, language and its popular conversation topics. As Christians it is important to remember moment by moment that our light can be hid when we sound like the world. The bushel is placed quickly over our light when we complain about the gas prices, speak in anger or use minced oaths (like heck instead of hell). The world should see a marked difference in our speech. Colossians 4:6 tells us to “Let your speech be always with grace…” Our speech should be spiritual, God enabled speech. One of my prayers each day is found in Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” Ask God to help you each day to be a light through your speech.
  5. A Compromising Company. I think of Peter warming his hands at the fire with the servants during Christ’s trial. (Matthew 26:58) Avoiding clear identification with Jesus, he stood afar off with a worldly company who did not love Christ. Peter was not there to win them but blend in with them. This choice of company partly led to his denial of Jesus, a decision he would regret for the rest of life.  Sometimes Christians hide their light by “hanging” with the wrong crowd. Like Peter, they try to blend with the world and not clearly identify with Christ. Let’s be sure that we are not placing a bushel over our light by having a compromised company.

Jesus has told us that we are lights to the world and has commanded that we let them shine unhindered, undimmed and bushel free. Take a moment and ask Jesus if you are shining as brightly for Him as He desires. Whatever bushels He points out, determine to confess it and forsake so that you radiate brilliancy for Jesus Christ.
